Clinical trials for mental health treatment will never give meaningful results because you can’t control for poverty and trauma.
Also the “chemical imbalance” theory has never been proven.
We are no further advanced in this field than Freud.
I have lasting harm from medications that are essentially just strong sedatives.
There’s no “long term evidence that antipsychotics are effective”.
Do you know why?
Because they kill people. Because you don’t live very long on them.
I did not smoke, drink, or use illicit drugs during my 12+ years on every mental health drug under the sun. I gained 150lbs with comorbidities. My blood pressure was 190/110 on 2 blood pressure medications. I went off all of them. I spent 5 months in a level of pain and withdrawal and psychosis I have no words for. The withdrawal never ended – I just could no longer spend weeks at a time not sleeping, eating, and in excruciating pain. So I went back on medication.
I don’t have advice for coming off them. I wouldn’t again. I would’ve just killed myself. I spent too long on them. It was too late.
I know others who came off but they were younger, healthier, and on them for much less time.
It was torture in a very real way. It still is.
I have never been arrested. Never failed a drug test. Held steady employment and paid all my bills and lived independently while sedated to high heaven.
Clawed my way into a better profession
I hold a Wharton degree.
Theres no magic pill for trauma.
But there sure as hell are potions peddled as such that screw you up.
I don’t know if the pain ever stops. I don’t know what level of damage I have from this.
But I do know something.
There are a whole lot of people profiting off the pain of others.
And doctors don’t really ask patients how these meds impact them.
When patients try to tell them, they’re ignored.
No happy ending here. Just…..wanting to scream at the world. Wanting to yell from the rooftops how evil it all is.
Praying for justice and retribution that will never come.
