Laughs and Lobotomies

I think antipsychotics evolved from lobotomies much the same as lethal injection from the guillotine, or hangman’s noose.

We wanted to see an evil person appear to fall asleep, without any blood on our hands.

It was never about the person at the end of the needle or the end of the noose.

That did not matter.

But the thumb that pushed the plunger, or let go the rope, or tapped the hammer, that person wanted a clear conscience.

So we chemically kill, sedate, and lobotomize.

And it’s all very sterile, very medical, very clinical, very just.

It brings order to a chaotic world.

And no one speaks for us.

No one listens.

My damage is done.

And maybe no one listens when I speak, but I will be the only one who does, if it must be so.

For if I can save one child from Omelas – then let me be the one who walks away.
