Until I was school aged I was raised in a small town in Iowa in the transcendental meditation movement.
There were huge domes in the town where meditators would practice.
There was a university, and a school for it.
My father completed his master’s degree and then was a principal at the high school there.
I was young, I was given a walking mantra. I still remember it to this day.
You weren’t supposed to share your mantra as it was supposed to be unique to you – but I did with a friend. We had the same.
It was Ing.
So much for uniqueness I suppose.
It was a bit of a cult.
I don’t believe Maharishi was any sort of prophet, guru, or god.
Although I believe he believed he was.
He had amassed riches well beyond what one would consider appropriate for a holy man.
Was accused of things no holy man should do.
Meditation is just clearing your mind.
You can go for a walk
Take a hot bath
Paint
Knit.
But I wouldn’t pay hundreds of dollars to some organization to learn it.
And I’d leave Mia Farrow out of it.
