One night while walking home we saw a man, face bloodied, on the ground in front of our apartment. Another man was kneeling over him. I’m not sure if he was trying to stop bleeding, or comfort him, or what was happening. Most people were walking by. We told the front desk, who phoned the police. We were told it was phoned in already, that it was an assault. I don’t know what happened to that man.
Today, in a wealthy suburban shopping center, a middle aged white woman fell on her bum. She was sitting. She appeared fine. 10 people gathered around her, the cops were called, they put cones up.
How many of those people would’ve stopped for the bloodied man on our doorstep? Would’ve given a blanket to a homeless person on a cold day? Would’ve sat with them? or brought over a hot coffee?
I don’t understand.
