I asked my father recently why he never drank. I had never asked – though he avoided alcohol as long as I could remember. I knew he drank socially before my birth. He hesitated. He said because he proposed to my mother drunk, and never wanted to make a decision like that again intoxicated.
I’ve heard the story from my mother too. She said she was so intoxicated she had to call him the next day and ask if he’d really proposed, and if she said yes.
Her take was maybe if she’d stayed drunk the whole marriage it would’ve worked.
You know that a drunken marriage proposal isn’t a blood oath correct?
You could’ve both denied it the next morning.
Not married.
And avoided creating and ruining several lives.
Stubbornness certainly runs in my blood.
