Antipsychotics are prescribed to “reduce excitatory neurotransmitters”, “stabilize brain chemistry”, “relieve symptoms of psychosis”.
All nonsense. Anything made confusing when it should be simple is done so intentionally.
They block dopamine. Tranquilizers work the same way. Most psych drugs fall into uppers or downers. Antipsychotics are tranquilizers.
The first time I took Seroquel I slept for 20 hours straight. It was 100mg.
When I was prescribed it “therapeutically“, it was closer to 400mg. I could barely get out of bed.
I’ve seen ads for Rexulti – a shiny new medication for the treatment of agitation in dementia – which antipsychotics have been used off label for for decades.
And what is Rexulti? It is Brexpiprazole – a derivative of Aripiprazole – also known as Abilify. An antipsychotic. One that I’ve been on. One that has come off patent – and is available as a generic.
All that happened was a drug company tweaked an existing drug used off label for this purpose already and ran a study that “proved” it worked for something it had been used for for decades.
We know that antipsychotics kill dementia patients faster. It’s not a cure – just a chemical restraint for the agitation.
So why this shiny new drug?
It’s on patent. Money makes the world go round.
And fuck your grandma as long as she doesn’t punch anyone anymore right?
There aren’t enough of us to make a difference, to pull these medications.
Opioids are the drug of the moment – and who really cares about the schizos anyway?
