I believe I am the last of the Philadelphia Irish of my family to still live in the city proper.
Some of my relatives hold land here – as the English did to us in the famine.
This city does not prosper as it once did.
They call the Latinos and the Blacks and the Arabs lazy.
In want of handouts.
Men and women who may have been doctors or engineers in their own countries.
Or maybe simple farmers, as we were.
Fleeing unspeakable evil.
Or starved of opportunities.
As we once were.
“Irish need not apply”.
How long has it been?
Not so long.
You should remember.
At the inauguration there was a priest, a rabbi, and a reverend.
Where was the Imam?
Pray for the sinners, and the hypocrites.
Pray for Palestine.
Pray for what we have forgotten and what we have become.
