We are not stupid and we are not crazy ~ A

Are you happy?

“Are you happy with your current dosage of antidepressants?”

As if life circumstances could be fixed by a pill.

“You should see a therapist”

I have.  Most don’t take insurance, if you can find one taking new patients at all.  And $150+ a session aggravates stresses caused by life circumstances, see above.

“Have you seen your psychiatrist lately?”

I see them regularly.  Close to $200 a session now.  Also aggravates stresses caused by life circumstances, once again, see above.

“Why are you upset when I gave you a depression screener when you came into a GP visit for diarrhea?”

How about if I worked at a coffee shop and every time you bought a coffee I told you you needed a nose job?  You have my shrink’s number if you have concerns – or you could just you know, treat me like an adult.

“There are resources available”

No there aren’t.  Not unless you cheat the system.  Or have a stint in rehab or a criminal record.  I have a bachelor’s degree and neither of those.  So fuck me I guess.

“there should be scholarships available”

They go to people who want to be therapists and charge $150 an hour.  Or research for medication no one needs or could afford.  Not to people with lived experience.  There is one scholarship for us.  And it demands me to hand over my medical records instead of some silly 500 word essay.  To “prove” it.

The problem is poverty.  The problem is poverty and continued trauma and putting us on medication so strong you may as well keep us locked in the attic like you used to.

At least there I could have some peace.
