Where are you originally from?
Is a thing that they used to say.
And over the years, the answer I gave
Have not always been one and the same.
As a child, I would have said Iowa! Only
And left the whole story as that.
But now I am older, the story is bolder.
And adding to it a matter of fact.
So now I will say, with an amount of dismay,
That I came round this way through two paths.
I came into this world, a tiny little girl, through Iowa alone and that’s that.
But I made a quite long pit stop, in a place I’d rather have not, that most would now call my hometown.
Philadelphia way, is the town I must say, through which I’ve found myself in quite a lot.
So now that I’m here, I’ve had the green beer.
Greased quite a few poles and watched Birds.
Not one and the same, nor the same poles you may frame, in your idea of this place I’ve called home.
Although I am meaner, I also am greener, and a cowboy I am not.
But had I not left, I would not have seen, could not have seen, all the things on Mulberry Street.
And you see, don’t you see, it was a real street, a very real street, a street they in fact now call Arch.
